About Gypsy Horses
Origin of the Breed: The Gypsy Horse was initially bred by Irish Travellers and Romani Travellers from Great Britain to serve as working horses for their wagons. These wagons, commonly referred to as vardoes, were developed during the mid-1800s and were extensively used from the late 1800s to the 1920s.
They possess the unique characteristic of having double manes that can grow down past their knees. The striking feathering that they are renowned for starts at their hock and gracefully cascades over their powerful hooves. With their exceptional temperament, strength, and trainability, the Gypsy Vanner embodies the epitome of a perfect horse.
Gypsy horses also exhibit distinctive and impressive feathering on their legs, along with thick tails and manes, lustrous coats, and thicker hair under the head and around the muzzle. Their temperament is highly regarded as well, as these horses are known for their calm and composed nature.
The primary breeds involved in the creation of the Gypsy Vanner Horse are the Shire, Clydesdale, Dales Pony, and, through genetic association, the Friesian (which played a role in the development of the other three breeds).
Frequently Asked Questions:
Is the Gypsy Vanner the same as the Gypsy Cob, Irish Cob, Irish Tinker, or the Drum Horse? The Gypsy Vanner Horse is the original name used by Americans for this breed. In the United States, Gypsy Horse, Gypsy Cob, and Gypsy Vanner all refer to the same horse. However, in Europe, they are sometimes referred to as Irish Cob or Irish Tinker.
Gypsy horses are often more expensive compared to other breeds primarily due to their rarity. With only 10,000 Gypsy Vanner horses worldwide, owning one becomes a symbol of status. Additionally, Gypsy Vanner horses are not only beautiful and versatile but also friendly in nature.
The temperament of the Gypsy horse is generally friendly and easygoing.
Gypsy Vanners require high maintenance and extensive grooming to ensure their health and comfort, especially due to the feathering on their legs, thick manes, and tails. Their long manes and tails require special attention.
